Lago Naftìa (Sicily, Italy)

Naftìa lake

Type: Cold Vent
Description: Take the State Road 447 from Catania to Gela and take the fourth exit to Palagonia. There is also a sign indicating Mofeta dei Palici. Follow this indication and after slightly more than 2 km there is the entrance of the plant where CO2 is extracted from the former lake. The site is into this private property. The old lake is now covered with a concrete dome that was used in the past to collect the gas and direct it through pipes to the plant. Today the gas is pumped directly from wells around the lake and gas bubbles in water only when the plant is not operating.
