Cumbre Vieja (Canary Islands, Spain)

Cumbre Vieja volcano, La Palma, Canary Islands

Volcano: Cumbre Vieja (see Cumbre Vieja at the Smithsonian Institution website in a new tab)
Type: Soil Diffuse Emission
Description: Cumbre Vieja (Spanish: Old Summit) is an active although dormant volcanic ridge on the volcanic ocean island of Isla de La Palma in the Canary Islands, Spain, that erupted twice in the 20th century – in 1949, and again in 1971.Nowadays, there are no visible gas emissions from fumaroles or hot springs at Cumbre Vieja. However, recent studies indicated that the main N-S volcanic rift of Cumbre Vieja represents an area of enhanced permeability for deep gas migration that is a preferential route for degassing, where significant amounts of non-reactive gases (helium) escape to the atmosphere
